Last month we had our first Deltadrip meeting! Deltadrip is a project that investigates the extent to which water and nutrient savings can be achieved through the innovative use of drip irrigation and fertigation, as an alternative to traditional irrigation techniques, like water reels, and fertilization methods.
The deep groundwater in Zeeland and other coastal provinces of the Netherlands is brackish, and salinisation of the scarce fresh (ground) water occurs when too much groundwater is extracted for irrigation in dry periods. That is why as Acacia Water we have come together with Delphy , Louis Bolk Institute, Broere Irrigation and the Waverijn Farm to generate knowledge on the differences in the water and nutrient use between traditional and innovative irrigation and fertilization techniques. This will allow growers to make better decisions about the application of new techniques in the light of threatening water shortages as a result of climate change.
The hoses for drip subirrigation and fertigation have already been laid by Arie-Jan Broere! Let’s get to work!
