This study partnered with the Rivierenland Water Board to investigate the options of freshwater measures in the area known as the ‘Kop van de Betuwe’, the eastern part of the Betuwe area. They studied options in the water system and at plot level to limit the impact of water shortages that may occur in the future. This is a first step in the direction of formulating agreements on water accessibility within the framework of the Delta Programme.

A tool has been developed in order to provide insight into how water needs relate to the measures considered to be a realistic option to ensure access to fresh water: the Watermaat (Water Standard). This tool compares the contribution of the various freshwater measures with the expected water needs in the area. This allows us to explore choices on the scale of measures that are implemented in a certain area, providing quick insight into the magnitude of the proposed contribution of the freshwater measures to meeting the water demand.
