A robust and sustainable water system in Ethiopia

Heineken Ethiopia, Harar Brewery

Harar Brewery

Published: 01-03-2015

The water supply of Harar Brewery, since 2011 owned by Heineken, comes from groundwater 30 km away from the brewery and from the natural Ginela spring on the brewery’s premises. By drilling 3 new wells and renovating the Ginela spring, Acacia Water completely renovated the groundwater winning for the brewery.

To create a robust and sustainable system, a groundwater monitoring system was set up. The monitoring systems checks and controls the influence from the water winning on the shallow groundwater levels. For observation of the deep withdrawal, two wells with a depth of 60 meters were drilled. With these wells the effects of the withdrawal on the deep aquifer can be measured.

This project is part if the Sustainable Water Service Harar Ragional State (SWHS). After the completion of this project the monitoring system and the  Harar Brewery Water Management Information System were successfully transferred to the brewery.
