In the Quarter Amsterdam South-East the thickness of the geological top layer is highly variable. The vulnerability to groundwater related problems is much higher in areas where the top layer is relatively thin.
Waternet commissioned Acacia Water to perform a detailed analysis of the top layer and the groundwater system in order to map the most problematic areas. The analysis shows that some of the most problematic areas are located below residential areas; it is highly advisable to install extra drainage system at these sites. The project resulted in many new insights with regard to urban hydrolology in general, and specifically with regard to the groundwater system in Amsterdam.
The insights are of uttermost importance for Waternet to develop their groundwater management policy and to plan future drainage systems.
