Last week, our colleague Victor Langenberg was in wonderful and exciting Morocco for water and salinity assessments, stakeholder meetings and mapping of water-agri opportunities for next steps, together with Arjen de Vos of The Salt Doctors doctors (Texel).
We traveled to the magnificent oasis ecosystems in the east as well as the agricultural areas around culturally diverse Marrakesh and Agadir. In all places salinization and water scarcity is becoming a real real concern, especially with the current drought.
Netherlands experts are not yet well known in Morocco, but looking at the accomplishments and vast knowledge of both countries on water use and agriculture (also in terms of culture and history) a close collaboration on pressing water and food issues seems only logical. For this mission we greatly thank Niek Schelling and Mohamed Amine Moustanjidi of the Dutch Embassy for making this possible, together with Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO)).
