In 2017-2018 Acacia Water, under the flag of Cordaid and partners, supported the development of catchment management plans for Lokok and Lokere, in Karamoja Region, northeastern Uganda. As a follow-up to this assignment, Acacia Water was recently requested to develop so-called popular versions of the plan and start with the upgrade of the hydrological monitoring network as specified in the plans.
The popular versions are illustrated glossy booklets to raise awareness amongst stakeholders on the catchment management plans, share contact information, promote alignment of ongoing and future activities with the plans, and to attract funding for implementation. The regional and national authorities responsible for water resources management supervise the development of the booklets.
The upgrade of the hydrological monitoring network is kick-started through the upgrade of the two main discharge gauges in the catchments, and the installation of automatic loggers to record the groundwater levels at the two existing observation wells. Acacia Water supports the installation of the loggers and telemetric equipment, develops the online environment to visualize the data, and trains the government staff to operate and maintain the equipment, and analyze the collected data.
The outcomes of the assignment aim to promote the implementation of the catchment management plans, and support fact-based decision making with regard to sustainable water resources management in the future.
The assignments are conducted with financial support from the German Development Cooperation and the Department for International Development (DFID), under the Enhancing Resilience in Karamoja Project.
