Water for 3 States in Sudan

Solutions Water and food shortages

Drought causes significant water and food shortages in Sudan. As part of the ‘Water for Three States’ project, Acacia Water works on improving access to safe drinking water and sanitation. The knowledge about the water system is expanded by means of hydrologic studies. This enables the project to support water authorities in their water management, which will eventually lead to greater access to water on a local level.

Acacia Water studies the water balance in fifteen catchments in cooperation with the Aqua4East Partnership under the management of the ZOA foundation. Hydrologic models provide insight into the difference between water demand and water supply. This sheds light on how much water is needed for a specific area and which measures we can offer to provide access to this water.

The success of measures for water access will depend not only on the volume of water. Potential environmental effects, social changes and the possible impact on conflicts are contributing factors as well. The actual feasibility of the measures will be determined by comparing several scenarios. All of these parameters and boundary conditions are taken into consideration in the process.
