Urban hydrology Amsterdam Southeast

The Amsterdam Southeast district has great variations in depth of the topsoil layers. Areas located on a relatively thin top layer are confronted with groundwater flooding. On the instructions of Waternet, Acacia Water identified the problem areas using a detailed analysis of the upper layer and the groundwater system. This analysis showed that some of the stressed areas are under housing estates and residential districts, and that it would be advisable to install additional drainage systems. The study yielded a lot of new insights for urban hydrology, particularly for Amsterdam’s water management.

These insights have proven of great significance for the design of the groundwater policy by Waternet and to determine the necessary drainage strategy.
