The Millenium Water Alliance

An elaborated hydrogeological study was carried out in Kenya within the framework of the Millenium Water Alliance. The project focused on increasing and improving the natural and artificial water storage capacity in arid countries. The core objective of this project was mapping the possibilities for 3R-interventions in Kenya; 3R is an abbreviation for Recharge, Retention and Reuse of freshwater.

The process was demand-driven; stakeholder meetings were organised in order to identify uses and needs. The outcomes of these meetings were then assessed in relation to the physical, environmental and hydrogeological conditions and translated into practical solutions. A major contribution to the project consisted of the development of 3R potential-maps. An overlay of the geologic, morphologic, hydrologic, land use and physical conditions and the requirements for different 3R-interventions defines the maps. Ultimately, these provide an overview of the locations where different 3R-interventions can be implemented. The results were shown to and verified with the stakeholders. In the end, an integrated package of knowledge and designs serves the implementation of 3R-interventions. Access to freshwater resources is enhanced where and when it is most needed.

The described process was set-up in such a manner that the outcomes prioritize cost-efficient and sustainable interventions. The project aimed for a well thought-through decision making process to endure a long term solid freshwater supply system.
